Indoor vs outdoor tennis lessons: which suits you?
In the Netherlands the tennis season is traditionally outdoor (April–October) and indoor (October–April). But what's the real difference for your development, and what fits your situation? This article lays out the facts.
This article compares indoor and outdoor tennis lessons on weather dependency, surface, scheduling and price, and discusses hybrid models for year-round progress in the Amstelveen / Amsterdam region.
Benefits of indoor tennis
- Year-round progress — no lessons cancelled by rain, cold or wind
- Predictable scheduling — easier to combine with school or work
- Constant surface — usually hard court or carpet, predictable bounce
- Better for young children — fewer distractions, controlled temperature
- Evening availability — lighting included, no time lost to dusk
Benefits of outdoor tennis
- Clay experience — physically less demanding, teaches sliding and long rallies
- Match realism — KNLTB competitions are largely played outdoor
- Social club culture — often tied to a club with activities
- Learning to manage wind and sun — part of real match skills
- Often cheaper per hour of court rental
Hybrid models
For most serious players a combination is ideal: indoor in winter for structured progress, outdoor in summer for match experience and social play. This avoids the 'winter gap' in which many recreational players stand still for months.
Where to find indoor tennis in the Amstelveen / Amsterdam-South region
Full indoor facilities in this region are available at 359.tennis at the NTC, Frans Otten Stadion and to a limited extent at Tennispark Startbaan. Most local tennis clubs (TV Buitenveldert, TV De Vliegende Hollander, AMVJ) are outdoor only. See also our comparison of Amstelveen providers.
What does 359.tennis offer?
We offer both indoor and outdoor lessons at the NTC. Indoor lessons require no membership; outdoor lessons require TV De Kegel membership. This hybrid model is a deliberate choice to enable year-round progress for players who don't want to play only in summer. View the programme overview.
