Group training vs private lessons: which suits you?

Group lessons and private coaching each have their own advantages. At 359.tennis we often recommend a combination — but which mix suits your situation?

This article compares group training with private lessons in tennis at 359.tennis. When to choose what, and how to combine both for maximum growth.

    Benefits of group training

    • Social interaction — learning from and with peers
    • Match experience — playing points against different opponents
    • Motivation — group dynamics stimulate effort and fun
    • Cost-effective — more training time at a lower rate per hour
    • Team spirit — learning teamwork, communication and sportsmanship

    Benefits of private lessons

    • Individual attention — 100% focus on your development
    • Technical acceleration — deep improvement of specific strokes
    • Flexibility — tailored training, own pace and schedule
    • Targeted correction — immediate feedback on every shot
    • Mental coaching — space for personal guidance

    When to choose what?

    • Beginners: start with group lessons
    • Advanced with specific goals: add private lessons
    • Competition players: combine both
    • Adult returners: private lessons to quickly get back to level

    The 359.tennis approach

At 359.tennis we recommend an integrated approach. Our academy players train in groups for match simulation, supplemented with private lessons for individual development points.

    Decision matrix: situation → recommendation

    • Beginner under 10: group lesson (social learning, enjoyment first)
    • Adult beginner: 1–2 private lessons for the basics, then a group
    • Intermediate with a technical issue: 4–6 private lessons, then back to group
    • Competition player: hybrid — weekly group + 1 private every 2 weeks
    • Returner after injury or break: private lessons to quickly get back to level

Hybrid model — often the best choice

Combining a weekly group session with 1–2 private lessons per month gives most players the best result: social interaction and match play from the group, targeted technical improvement from private. Ask us about a fitting hybrid package.

For over 10 years, we've been taking tennis lessons at 359.tennis and playing Saturday afternoon competition at TV De Kegel. We're a fun group of friends in the 50+ category. It's wonderful to be socially and athletically active together. The combination of lessons and competition truly keeps us together as a team.

We have three children playing tennis at 359 — ages 6 to 14. Each child has their own path and coach. What connects us is Sunday afternoon family tennis. It's become our family moment.

Bram had his first trial lesson last month and I was immediately convinced. The coach gave him a high-five afterwards and told him exactly what he did well. No pressure, just enthusiasm. We signed up for the full season right away.
