How to support your child in tennis without pressure (and still get results)
The best sport parents don't coach extra—they stabilize. Here's how to help your child grow with Fit, Fun and Focus.
Supporting your child in tennis is an art. You want to help, but you don't want to create pressure. At 359.tennis, we see it this way: the coach trains the game, the parent trains the climate. In that climate, a child can learn, make mistakes, and recover better each time. Explore our academy programme or read about choosing the best junior programme.
1) Focus on process, not outcome
Replace 'Did you win?' with process questions. This trains identity around growth, not results.
- •What were you brave about today?
- •What did you try that was new?
- •What would you do the same next time?
2) Emotions are normal—recovery is the skill
The goal isn't to never feel frustrated—it's to recover faster.
- •Let them vent for 10 minutes
- •Then: 1 lesson + 1 win
- •Finish with: 'What's your next step?'
3) The 359 parent role: Fit – Fun – Focus
As a parent, you play a unique role in each aspect of the 359 method.
- •Fit: sleep, routine, warm-up, recovery
- •Fun: joy, psychological safety, small wins
- •Focus: one clear goal per session (e.g., 'deep balls', 'split-step')
4) What to avoid (even if well-meant)
Some things are well-intentioned but counterproductive.
- •Technical analysis in the car
- •Comparing to other kids
- •Rewarding only results
Key takeaways
- ✓Parent = stability, not extra coaching
- ✓Reset routines build mental toughness
- ✓Process questions create long-term motivation
